I am a Ph.D student in the Department of History, working with Professors Erin Rowe and Gabriel Paquette. My research area is situated at the intersection of Philippine, Spanish, and church histories. I am particularly interested in the secular aspects of religion in early modern Spain. It is through analyzing these non-religious aspects of religion that I wish to understand the strong, yet often overlooked, pragmatic component of faith. I am currently preparing my first year paper, tentatively, on Alonso Sánchez, a Spanish Jesuit who played a commanding part in convincing Philip II to retain the Philippines as a Spanish colony.
