The Johns Hopkins History Department has an excellent record of job placement for its graduate students. Of the students who have entered the program since 1993 and received the Ph.D., fully 63% (as of December, 2006) have obtained tenure-track appointments teaching history. Of the remainder, many currently hold post-doctoral fellowships, full-time but non-tenure-track academic employment, or non-academic positions for which the Ph.D. in History is a significant qualification. The program provides workshops on the job market in order to give practical guidance for students seeking academic employment, as well as individual counselling by the Director of Graduate Studies.
