Graduate Student wins 2022 Smithsonian Award for Excellence in Exhibitions

Congratulations to Dominique Hazzard, the junior curator of “Food for the People: Eating and Activism in Greater Washington” at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum (Senior Curator, Dr. Samir Meghelli).  Dominique Hazzard is a PhD student in the department.

The Smithsonian Institution has awarded “Food for the People” the 2022 Smithsonian Award for Excellence in Exhibitions. The award recognizes “extraordinary accomplishment in exhibitions at the Smithsonian.”

The 2,965 sq ft. indoor/outdoor exhibition uses photos, archaeological and community objects, oral histories, and interactive stations to explore historical and contemporary food system issues in the Washington, D.C. region. “Food for the People” is up through September 17th.

Dominique wishes to express gratitude for the support of the department, including Modern America and Black World seminarians who provided her and Dr. Meghelli with feedback on the exhibition script.
